MECE 4340 - CAPSTONE 1 (ADVICE)

1.) Pick a SIMPLE* project so you can complete assignments on time.

2.) PICK A SIMPLE PROJECT so you won't need a lot of money.

3.) Try to have a group where you KNOW they will actually do their part of the assignments.

4.) Assignments come up quicker than you think and if you have a heavy course load, you're gonna have a bad time if you're not used to a solid scientific process.

5.) Pick a simple project so you don't have to learn entirely new subjects on the fly.

6.) Practice your fucking slides. They grade BRUTALLY for stupid subjective shit like "appearing" nervous, using too many 'ums' and other verbal fillers, even glancing at your presenter notes is points off... They will even grade you on your enthusiasm... They WILL call you out on your bullshit in front of everyone (especially using formulas wrong), so know what the fuck you are talking about. And finally, they will murder you on time (2 points for every MINUTE you go over or under INCLUDING THEIR questions), so don't leave a bunch of holes in your presentation; give them the full picture from concept to product.

7.) Check the class schedule because some days you wont have class but when you do there might be some graded in class participation assignment to check attendance.

8.) Just pick a simple goddamned project.

9.) Hope you like to CAD because it's REALLY handy. Hook yourself up with the 3 years of free licenses that Autodesk gives each and every one of you and learn Inventor or Fusion 360 (hint: they're way better than Soliddoesn'tworks, and Pretty Terrible CAD (PTC) Creole).

10.) Remember that these professors do research (part of the reason they suck so bad teaching), really try to look into the research part of your design and emulate things like formatting and writing style. This make it easier for them to read your project reports and well, you'll just get a better grade.

*Simple is defined as not putting a refrigerator in a backpack, something a company might already have planned for capstone group to do, or a device that contains many strengths of your group's skillset and maybe some extra stuff to learn as well.

As far as downloadables, we have some rubrics for various assignments, grading rubric for the presentations, and I'll see if there's anything else that might give you a heads up
